Chapter 8 - Zoe

After roasting the vegetables for that night's meal, Zoe slipped into her new lingerie in anticipation of Jake returning home soon. The lace and faux leather hugged her curves perfectly, and after trying the bodysuit on at the shop, she almost didn't want to take it off at all.

It made her feel sexy and powerful—like she could do anything.

With this, she could definitely prove herself to Jake. How could he resist her?

Although, maybe resisting her wasn't exactly the issue—their attraction to each other was off the charts as far as she could tell; it was just getting him to commit for longer than a week that was the issue in her mind.

Hence the cooking and fancy outfit. Zoe had more plans, too, but depending on how tonight went, that would shape her next moves. She would have five more days to impress him and convince him that they should get married for real ... or else she'd be shipped off to start a life elsewhere.

A life she didn't want.

She didn't even want to think of what would happen if things didn't work out with Jake. Instead, she put all her energy into making sure everything went according to plan.

Zoe cranked up the heat on Jake's indoor BBQ grill and took the steaks out of her ginger and spice marinade. They'd been soaking for hours now, and they smelled divine. This had to be her best iteration of the recipe yet; it had to impress Jake if it impressed her.

Just as she was preparing to pop the steaks on the grill, the front steps creaked outside, and then the door opened. In a prepared action, Zoe swept her hair back to give her a wispy look while giving him the best view of her cleavage.

At first, he didn't notice her.

"Zoe? I'm home—" He turned as he took his shoes off, seeing her propped up beside the countertop. She tilted her head forward to give the look of staring up at him from beneath her lashes, and then gave him her most seductive smile.

"Hey, sugar. I hope you're hungry because I've been cooking up something real nice for you."

When his mouth opened slightly in shock, she knew she was on the right track. Instead of sauntering right over to him, she winked and placed the steaks on the now-hot grill.

The meat sizzled on contact, just like the hot waves of desire fluctuating through the kitchen between the two of them. Although she acted as nonchalantly as possible, her body heated up the instant she saw the desire in his eyes. She wanted to move over to him, to rub her hands all over his body and claim him as her own, but she also wanted to project an image of power, one of being in control.

Right now, she felt that she was succeeding. While the steaks cooked, she flicked her hair over her shoulder, running a deliberate hand over her side and down to her hip, crossing over glossy leather and lace as she did.
